David Lofgren, a botanical information consultant at the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum, speculates that the plant in question is the carob tree, Ceratonia siliqua, source of the well-known chocolate substitute.
Today, I met up with an old bully who picked on me in grade school in Australia and came to the States to see me. I spent a full month prepping for his arrival, weight training and learning karate. When he showed up at my door he said he had become a man of peace and begged for my forgiveness. I still punched him in the nose. RML
VLADIMIR NABOKOV PAPERS TO BE UNSEALED ON JUNE 23, 2009
From the independent radio producer listserv I am on…
According to the Library of Congress Manuscripts Division, which holds the papers of author Vladimir Nabokov, a set of sealed papers will be opened to the public for the first time on June 23, 2009.
These are Containers 1-20 and OV-1. Those containers had previously been restricted to researchers with the permission of Nabokov’s son, but all such restrictions are lifted on that date. It is not clear the extent to which anyone has actually had access to those records.
In 2004, I asked the Library of Congress for a listing of manuscript collection restrictions. That list is posted here and mentions the Nabokov sealed materials:
To view these records, simply contact the Library of Congress Manuscript Division office and ask that they retrieve each of those previously restricted boxes for use in the Manuscript Reading Room, on the first floor of the LOC Madison Building. Then you can just stop by and use the materials. Please register for a researcher identification card on the first floor of the Madison Building. It takes about 10 minutes to do this.

Where are they now? They met when he was in second grade and she was a married mother of four. She was arrested in 1997 for raping him at the age of 12, and spent her first trial pregnant. After she was released they were married and kept a low profile but… Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau now host parties at a night club in Seattle. “Hot for Teacher” is the theme. Classy.
A blog post on the Generation PRX site from Jones with some links to more creative vox pops for you to listen to.
And this Maketplace piece about Twitter by Chana Joffe-Walt where she uses her friends to do her journalistic experiment. So, don’t be afraid to go to your friends to get a story. Scroll down a little to listen to it, and read Sean Cole’s essay on the use of yourself and your friends in your reporting: when is it a good idea, and when is it a bad one?
“Once upon a mid-day sunny, while I savored Nuts ‘N Honey,
With my Tuscan Whole Milk, 1 gal, 128 fl. oz., I swore
As I went on with my lapping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at the icebox door.
‘Bad condensor, that,’ I muttered, ‘vibrating the icebox door -
Only this, and nothing more.’”—Tuscan Whole Milk, 1 Gallon, 128 fl oz: Amazon.com: Grocery
